The Company expects to immediately begin operations with this contractor producing hundreds of kilograms of spider silk per month and to achieve production levels reaching multiple metric tons of spider silk per month as early as the first quarter of 2023. The contractor is in possession of the Company’s specialized eggs and anticipates a 90-day ramp-up for the first deliveries under the contract.

Pilot testing with this contractor during the first two quarters of 2022 demonstrated the capacity and expertise of this manufacturer to operate at a large scale and with excellent quality.

Under the contract terms, Kraig Labs will become a minority owner of the silk producer. Kraig Labs will have complete access to the manufacturer’s financial records and an onsite presence to ensure the proper handling and security of the Company’s propriety spider silk technology.

These new breeds of silkworms were explicitly created for large-scale production. 

With a larger cocoon and longer silk filament, these optimized Dragon Silk breeds reduce production costs and increase throughput.

The new breeds were created using a process of hybridization, combining the best properties of Dragon Silk with the best practices in silkworm breeding to improve the size and robustness of the silkworm strain. Commonly used in commercial mundane silk production, the process of creating these production hybrid silkworms delivers between 30-100% larger silk cocoons than non-hybridized silkworms.

The Company first began the development of large cocoon hybrids in 2018. The success of that effort is the foundation of today’s announcement and the rollout of this technology into production. Commercializing this technology required the Company to develop multiple strains of Dragon Silk hybrids that, when paired together, deliver a consistent and scalable large cocoon production platform.

The finished recombinant spider silk yarn was spun from raw spider silk produced at Prodigy Textiles, the Company’s subsidiary located in Quang Nam province, Vietnam.

Today’s announcement marks a significant milestone for Kraig Labs, Prodigy Textiles, and the large-scale production of recombinant spider silk. This production run of Dragon Silk exhibits Prodigy Textiles’ full integration into Vietnam’s substantial silk textile industry. Vietnam produced nearly 1,000 metric tons of mundane silk in 2020.¹   This same supply chain was used, from start to finish, to create the first Dragon Silk made entirely in Vietnam.

While Prodigy Textiles remains focused on ramping up the output of recombinant spider silk cocoons, these supporting vendors will play an essential role in processing that silk into finished goods for a wide range of consumer markets.

The Company plans to ship this Dragon Silk yarn to SpydaSilk Enterprises, in Singapore, a joint venture partially owned by the Company, for weaving into fabrics and finished garments.

(OTCQB: KBLB) (“Company” or “Kraig Labs”), the biotechnology company focused on the development and commercialization of spider silk, announces it has taken delivery of key lab equipment to Prodigy Textiles, the Company’s Vietnam based subsidiary, to support onsite testing and screening of spider silk transgenic technologies.

Over the next few weeks, the Company’s US-based research team will work closely with the Prodigy team to complete equipment installation and conduct training. Once online, this equipment will allow for the complete transfer of all genetic screening and selection testing, for production operations, to Prodigy’s onsite lab.

The significance of this advancement in the Company’s production operation cannot be overstated. Previously all genetic testing was limited to Kraig Labs US R&D headquarters. COVID-related transportation and shipping restrictions over the last 24 months have meant that critical testing was delayed and, in some cases, not possible. This, in turn, forced the Company to lower its output at Prodigy to ensure production quality. With onsite process screening, Prodigy will be able to safely and effectively scale up operations and take full advantage of Prodigy’s new facilities. The goal is to run at maximum facility capacity consistently.

Yes, the holidays are just around the corner and we’re heading into 2022 in what is, by far, our strongest financial and fundamental position, so we’re excited about the coming advancements for Kraig Labs and anticipate spider silk’s commercial success in the New Year.

As you know, 2021 presented many new challenges, mostly centered on navigating the COVID-19 regulations, but addressing these with smart solutions has enriched Kraig and Prodigy Textiles, our Vietnamese subsidiary.

For example, after confirming proof of our production concept, we introduced the first automation into Prodigy’s workflow five months ago. This equipment has drastically improved our material handling and has allowed us to grow the size of our silkworm colony without bringing in additional labor. More importantly, this equipment is playing a key role in our quality control system and is the backbone on which we are building out our production capacity. This upgrade to our operations has delivered a sustained quality to our silkworm colony that was previously not attainable.

However, the next phase of this initiative is a game-changer; Prodigy’s fully equipped laboratory is a new onsite capacity that was designed to mirror the capabilities of Kraig’s US R&D headquarters and provide in-process quality and genetic screening. Partnered with the automated production equipment, the new lab will provide Prodigy with the same world-class genetic screening capabilities that were critical in Kraig’s creation of spider silk transgenics. Once these capabilities are online, we anticipate judiciously scaling output to metric tons.

I believe that the importance of that milestone cannot be overstated, because it positions us to move on to the next chapter of our business model. Fulfilling the years’ long material request backlog, which is key to securing additional commercialization agreements. Plus, we plan on working with some inventors and product developers whose imagination may take spider silk to yet unknown frontiers.

Dr. Miller, who completed his Ph.D. and postdoctoral work at Yale, joined Kraig’s R&D team in July. He’s already made significant contributions in advancing the commercialization of the Company’s new lines of nearly pure spider silk and the silkworm immunity enhancement program.
